There could be many different reasons why your iPad is not playing any sounds. Here you will learn a couple of different methods to try and fix your iPad if it is just a simple issue that doesn’t require any technical repairs. Hopefully, these methods can help so you don’t have to open your iPad.
Common Solutions for No Sound on iPad
In this part, we will introduce 7 solutions. All of these methods can be performed by yourself to fix iPad sound not working without going to a repair store.
1. Turn Off Bluetooth
One of the reasons your iPad may not be playing any sound is because you might have been connected to a Bluetooth device without knowing it. Sometimes your iPad might automatically connect to Bluetooth devices in the area if you’ve previously connected to them and this can cause your sound to stop coming out of your iPad speakers.
Go to your iPad “Settings” app and make sure that Bluetooth you’re not connected to any other devices. Just to be safe, you should turn Bluetooth off so that it won’t automatically connect to any devices in the future.
2. Make Sure Airplay Is Off
If there is no sound on your iPad, it might have automatically connected to another device in the area through Airplay without you knowing. If this has happened then when you try to play media, the sound will not come out from your iPad.
You can check if you’re connected to another device through Airplay by swiping down from the top right on the home screen to open up the control center. On the top right, under your battery percentage, you will see your current media and you can click on the Airplay button to see if you’re connected to any other devices in the area. If for some reason you are connected to another device, all you have to do is click on “iPad” in the list of Airplay devices and the media output will change to your iPad’s speakers. Then check if your iPad sound is working or not.
3. Adjust the Volume In Control Center
Maybe you might not be hearing any sound coming out of your iPad because the volume control buttons on the side are not working. The volume buttons are pretty fragile and sometimes they may get stuck or if you drop your iPad a few too many times, they might completely stop working and lead to no sound on iPad.
If this is the case, then you will have to control your volume through your iPad’s “Control Center”. You can access your media volume settings in the “Control Center” by swiping down from the top right side on the home screen or the lock screen. When you swipe down you will see the “Volume” tab and can now adjust the volume of your iPad to your desired settings without needing to use the side buttons.
4. Unmute System Sounds
Some people complained about iPad no sound in games. Most of the time this is because they mute the system sound.
If you have a newer version of iPad, it may come with a mute switch on the side. Check to make sure that the switch is working properly and that it is not muted at the moment. If your switch is set to mute then just toggle it off to regain sound on your iPad.
If your iPad doesn’t have a mute switch then you will need to check the “Control Center” to make sure that you’re not on mute. Swipe down on your home screen or your lock screen to check your volume settings. If your volume bar is all the way down and muted then slide it up to turn on the sound and raise the volume. Then check whether your iPad still has no sound in games.
5. Force Restart Your iPad
If you’ve checked all your sound settings and made sure that your iPad isn’t being muted or isn’t playing through a Bluetooth device or Airplay device, but your iPad sound is still not working, then you may need to force restart your iPad to get the volume functions back to normal.
To force an iPad without a Home button to restart quickly press and release the volume up button and then the volume down button. Then press and hold the power button until the iPad turns off and the Apple logo appears, then release the power button.
To force restart an iPad with the Home button, press the power button and the Home button together. Release the buttons until you see the Apple logo.
Doing this will have forced your iPad to restart if it was stuck or the volume was glitching for any reason.
6. Make Sure iPad Is Not Stuck In Headphone Mode
The Apple website shows that there are a few people that have had this issue of their iPad being stuck in headphone mode, which will lead to no sound on iPad. First of all, you need to check if there is anything stuck in the headphone jack. If there is, clean the stuff gently.
If it has nothing inside, there were a couple of other different ways that were suggested to try and fix the issue but out of all the different methods, one stood out to be the best by all the other people who were having the same issue.
The best working method was to reset your iPad settings. This is going to be a normal reset where you will still keep all your data. You will just be resetting the iPad’s user settings in case there is something in the settings stopping your iPad from having volume. This is a fairly simple reset, also known as a “Soft Reset”. Open the “Settings” app and tap on “General”, then scroll down to “Reset” and select the “Reset All Settings” option.
7. Update iPad Software
Your iPad might be out of date which is what’s causing your iPad sound not working properly. If that’s the case then you will need to update your iPad to the newest software version available. Check your software version by going into “Settings”. When in settings, tap on “General” then “About” to see your current software version. Then go back to the “General” tab and tap on “Software Update” to check if there are any updates available for you to install. If your iPad shows that it is already up to date, then you may need to put it into “Recovery Mode” and connect it to iTunes to update it that way.
By doing it this way, iTunes will make sure that it completely updates your iPad to it’s most current software version available. This may be the best way to update your iPad if it is having any issues because iTunes will be able to detect if there are any other problems with your device so that you can get the best possible solution to resolve its problems.
